The word “digital” is used in our daily lives, we use it to communicate, work, enjoy watching tv and plenty of other things. The term “digital” started from historical roots such as the Jacquard Loom, Morse Code and the telegraph. These three things, along with plenty more have laid the foundations for our digital world today.
The Jacquard loom was used to automate weaving, creating a digitalized way, rather than all done by hand. Morse code and the telegraph advanced long-distance communication by encoding messages into signals, which is an early example of digital encoding. The first telephone also created another milestone, allowing for voice transmission over long distances, although it initially was analog, later becoming digital.
Moving further, into our present time, digital technology became a daily thing we use, such as computers and digital phones, such as the IPhone. Computers process information using 1s and 0s, also known as binary. The computer had marked the transition from analog to digital.
Being digital is more than technology, but is showing how there was a shift in how we transmit information and process it as well. Digital technology relies on encoding data into binary code and also works off of interconnected networks, from the internet to the cloud. Digital tools have also enabled automation in industries, no longer needing as much physical labor in many factories.
Technology continues to evolve, which will further make our world digital. AI is playing a significant role in the digital world. By machines learning and analyzing massive data sets, AI systems are now found in healthcare, cybersecurity and many other industries, showing the power of intelligent computing and automation. The use of AI is incredibly beneficial to many different industries, allowing for work to be done quicker with less human error. As AI advances, it soon may take over many jobs.
Being digital is not just about technology, but it is also brought into the world with us, and changes how we interact with the world.. By understanding digital advancements, it allows us to understand further in this rapidly changing environment. By learning about the history and impact of the digital world, it further allows us to understand the digital environment.
